The research themes of the PhD Programme in Human-Centred Precision Medicine reflect the multidisciplinary composition of the Academic Board and aim to integrate clinical, translational and organisational research, adopting a person-centred approach and focusing on the personalisation of care.
Doctoral candidates will develop original research projects, conducted primarily in clinical settings and in collaboration with healthcare facilities within the Provincial and National Health Services, in the following disciplinary areas:
- Medical and Internal Medicine Area
Projects focusing on diagnosis, prognosis and personalised care in internal medicine, geriatrics, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, rheumatology, paediatrics and psychiatry.
Research lines include:- identification of biological, clinical and social predictors of health outcomes;
- therapeutic optimisation in chronic and complex diseases;
- studies on multimorbidity, frailty, quality of life and treatment adherence;
- integration of biomedical and psychosocial indicators in person-centred precision medicine models.
- Surgical Area and Advanced Technologies
Clinical and translational research in general surgery, cardiac surgery, maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology and urology.
Main themes include:- innovation in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques;
- patient-reported outcomes;
- perioperative optimisation;
- integrated pain management and anaesthetic risk management;
- rehabilitation pathways and continuity of care.
- Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services
Projects in anaesthesia and intensive care, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy, pathology and laboratory medicine.
Research lines include:- development and validation of biomarkers and diagnostic algorithms;
- application of artificial intelligence and radiomics;
- studies on safety, quality and sustainability of diagnostic and therapeutic processes.
- Translational Medicine, Ethics and Co-Production of Knowledge
Cross-cutting themes integrating biomedical sciences and the humanities, with particular attention to narrative medicine, clinical research ethics, patient and caregiver involvement in research processes, and the evaluation of person-reported outcomes.
This area also includes studies on the psychosocial impact of biomedical innovation, doctor–patient communication, and the translation of scientific evidence into clinical practice.
- Methodological and Digital Innovation in Clinical Research
Development and application of advanced methodologies in clinical epidemiology, pragmatic trials, qualitative and mixed-methods research, and the integration of big data and computational sciences in precision medicine.
Key themes include health technology assessment (HTA), telemedicine, digital health, and service organisation oriented towards the personalisation of care.
