First-year doctoral students are required to obtain a minimum of 60 ECTS credits, of which between 10 and 20 must relate to educational activities. Optional courses can be chosen from those listed in the Manifesto of Studies.
Second- and third-year doctoral students must acquire a minimum of an additional 60 CFU/ECTS credits for each year. Optional courses may be chosen from those listed in the Manifesto of Studies.
The following requirements must be met in order to progress to the next year:
- regular attendance at the educational activities chosen from the Manifesto of Studies, with a compulsory (attendance ≥ 75%), and a positive final assessment. If the student does not achieve the minimum number of credits required for the year in question, the Doctoral Programme Committee may approve progression to the following year with reservations, possibly requiring the student to retake the courses;
- obtaining a satisfactory assessment for the first year from the adviser and tutor, and for subsequent years from the advisor and co-advisor(s). To this end, both must submit a concise, explicit and detailed assessment report on the doctoral student's progress to the Doctoral Programme Committee;
- For the first and second years: positive assessment by the Internal Committee for progression to the next year; the composition of the Committee and the assessment procedure are set out in a specific internal procedure.
If the student needs to substantially revise their research project based on the comments made by the advisor, the tutor or the Internal Committee, they will be invited to a subsequent discussion before the Executive Committee and in the presence of the advisor and the tutor.
On the basis of the above, the Doctoral Programme Committee will deliberate on the doctoral student's admission to the following year, which may be:
- APPROVED: positive assessment, with subsequent admission to the following year.
- APPROVED WITH RESERVATION: partially positive evaluation, allowing the student to continue the programme with the obligation to fill the gaps identified in their knowledge or in their research project. The procedures for lifting the reservation are decided on a case-by-case basis by the Doctoral Programme Committee.
- NOT APPROVED: negative evaluation. The student is excluded from the Programme and loses their doctoral student status (pursuant to Article 25, paragraph 4 of the University Regulations).
